Microsoft Asks Businesses to Scrap Windows XP

When Microsoft unleashed Vista a couple years ago there was not a huge movement of enterprise customers to the new operating system.   Microsoft is insisting this go round that businesses upgrade their Windows XP installations to Windows 7.   How do we feel about upgrading?  It depends on the situation.

Scenario #1 – Your computer is running Windows Vista (Any version) – UPGRADE

Scenario #2 – Your office has 10 computers all running Windows XP – Stick with Windows XP on your current computers, but any new computers that you purchase go ahead and get these with Windows 7.   Previously, after the release of Windows Vista, we still had companies purchase new computers with Windows XP using downgrade rights.

Scenario #3 – Your home computer has Windows XP – It’s your choice.   If you want to try something new, take the plunge and upgrade to Windows 7.  If you like the way things are, you’ll be just fine staying with Windows XP for the time being.

Scenario #4 – You have an office full of Macbooks and iMacs – Move along there is nothing for you to see here

Mozilla patches holes in Firefox 3.5, 3.0

Mozilla has patched a few holes in their Firefox web browser today.   You can get the update by going to “help” in the top menu of Firefox and click “check for update.”   Most installations will also update automatically and then prompt you to restart to install the update.

If you are not using Firefox yet as your main internet browser, for your computer’s safety, you should make the switch.  Firefox is a faster and safer browser then Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.   As we’ve seen with other updates, as soon as a vulnerability is identified, the team at Mozilla has a patch in the works.   This is unlike our friends over at Microsoft who can take months to patch critical bugs in their products.   You can download Firefox at the link below

Using Windows XP Mode in Windows 7

This morning I’ve been trying out the new Windows XP Mode in Windows 7.   The feature is available only in the Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate editions.   When it is installed you have a fully licensed copy of Windows XP which you can run within Windows 7.    We’ve spoken here quite a few times about the benefits of virtualization and this new XP mode brings virtualization to a broader audience.    The difference here is is that if you were to run another brand virtualization software such as VMware or Virtualbox you would have to buy a license for your copy of XP that you wanted to virtualize.   Windows XP mode provides a copy of XP free of charge to you the new Windows 7 user.    Windows XP mode runs within Microsoft’s Virtual PC software which uses very little memory and has a nice simple interface.   For those of you who are worrying about upgrading to Windows 7 and whether your programs that worked XP will work in Windows 7 this will be a great safety net.   Microsoft has designed Windows 7 to be compatible with the overwhelming majority of Windows XP software, but as with anything, there will be a few programs that just won’t install.   This is why we like the idea of Windows XP mode.   To learn more about XP mode you can click on the link below to go to Microsoft’s site to get an overview of the features.
